The
Mercury Super Spoiler II, sent by Paul Grala
From Kenneth Schwartz "Saw the
factory photo of the Super Spoiler and had to pass on this info. That
car survived! It's a Boss 429, red with black interior. Engine has been
freshly rebuilt, body is getting complete redo, I supplied many parts
from my donor cars. It had a rough life, but it is close to done. Seems
like no one believes it exists, but the owner has the original bill of
sale from Ford-- The numbers match! This guy owns a yellow King Cobra
also and the paper from Ford is correct on it too. My father was a
Lincoln-Mercury dealer, so I'v seen plenty Ford paperwork to compare his
to. Gotta throw you a curve, my friend has some old photos of a Ranchero
he had in the early 70's--- Boss 9 and a King Cobra nose with a strange
looking roof line. He kept copys of the Ford papers on it too. I think
he enjoys the controversy they stirr here in Tenn. Dam hard to laugh off
real bill of sales. I just want to know where the (experts) get the idea
that these cars don't exist? Thought you might like to have this info
for your personal stash. PS, I have to go by and fondle that Boss 9
every time I get to play in his garage. Kenneth Schwartz"

| The
following comes from John Craft "Great site. From what I
read, some still claim that Fomoco actually built a "Super"
Spoiler II and that the car is alive and living somewhere in the
southland. Please find attached Ford design studio pics of what might
have become the Spoiler II (note the lack of the work "Super"
in the car's side and trunk stripes) taken in Dearborn in late July
1969. (pretty darned good, if you ask me). |
Careful
examination of the two head on shots reveals that the car has only one
hood line (driver's side). This is not really an impossibility since the
car is a clay styling studio treatment-and NOT a real car. It looks like
Ford stylists took a rolling Cyclone/Montego prototype chassis (sans
nose) and clayed up a new beak to see how the King Cobra nose would look
on a Merc. |
Further
evidence of the car's clay nature is found in the nose dragging stance
created by the great weight of the clay styling material. So much for
the myth of the found in a barn "Super" Spoiler II. I have
never seen any other shots-or documents from Ford that document even ONE
'70 Spoiler II prototype being built. Until or unless the much rumored
(but completely undocumented) "barn" car surfaces with
documentation, I'm afraid, it will have to remain just an urban legend.

 |
| PS
The Volunteer State KC mentioned on your web site was NOT (as claimed)
built by Ford. Rather, it was assembled from parts-apparently by Holman
Moody. As the story goes, H&M bolted on a "race" nose to a
street going Torino to create the car. It DOES NOT carry a Ford style
VIN. |
PSS
Now that the mold made during the restoration of the vermillion car has
surfaced, it is more than likely that other "barn" cars will
be surfacing soon. Caveat Emptor. Again, Great site. Keep up the good
work-remember Fomoco intermediates won more races than Mustangs ever
did! John Craft"

Ford 100th Anniversary Celebration. "Anyone ever tell you the story
about the two Spoiler II's? The split grill car was destroyed,
this is the survivor. CU, Ken
P.S. --- Old hillbillys hiding in the bushes often know more than
they let on --- LOL!"
|
"Now that
this car is on display at Ford's 100'th party, I
don't think the owner will mind me sending you a pic. It may be a Merc,
but it has a Torino's soul." |
Photo
by Kenneth Schwartz, he knows the actual owner of this car! |

Here's one of the factory pics of the white King Cobra. I`ve got a few
more of these. You can add these to the King Cobra page. Daryl"
